As part of the ongoing Democracy and the Environment Seminar Series, the UCD Earth Institute, in collaboration with Advance Center for Professional Education in Digital Transformation, is set to host an engaging panel discussion titled “Sustainability, Technology, and Democracy”. This event will bring together leading experts to explore how emerging technologies can drive sustainability while ensuring inclusivity and democratic governance.

How can technological advancements support sustainability efforts while aligning with democratic values? 

The UCD Earth Institute, in collaboration with the Advance Center for Professional Education in Digital Transformation, is hosting an insightful panel discussion titled “Sustainability, Technology, and Democracy.”

As part of the ongoing
Democracy and the Environment Seminar Series, this event will explore how emerging technologies can drive sustainability while ensuring inclusivity and democratic governance.

Bringing together distinguished experts from academia and industry, the discussion will tackle key questions such as:

  • How can technology be leveraged to build more sustainable systems across industries?
  • What are the risks and challenges in ensuring sustainability efforts remain democratic and inclusive?
  • How can education and policy frameworks support the integration of sustainability and technology in practice?

Expert Speakers & Insights

The panel will feature thought leaders who specialize in sustainability, digital transformation, and policy:

  • Dr. Thomas Macagno – Education Innovation Lead (Sustainability) at UCD Innovation Academy, with over 30 years of global experience in sustainability, software development, and business consultancy.
  • Conor Lawlor – Coordinator of the B.Eng in Data Centre Facilities Engineering at ATU, offering a critical perspective on the environmental impact of AI and data centres.
  • Dr. Camilla Perruselo – Assistant Professor at UCD’s School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, specializing in sustainable food systems and alternative proteins.
  • Dr. Patrick Brodie – Lecturer and Ad Astra Fellow at UCD’s School of Information and Communication Studies, whose research in the FORSEE project examines AI’s environmental, economic, and ethical implications.
  • John Walsh – Head of Emerging Energy Technology and R&D at ESB, providing insights into energy policy and infrastructure’s role in sustainability.
